“Morgan Thorson has a mix-master mind, from which postmodern movement and the detritus of everyday life spin out as hilarious vignettes.” —New York Notebook
“A steady reveal—private, sincere, touchable, distant, chubby—celebrating the power of the partial view. A take-away curio, a no-nonsense epic told by an infamous reclining nude. A real throw down where found objects finally tell all.”
SPACEHOLDER FESTIVAL (SF) is an evening-length dance for six performers. In this iteration, SF explores the concepts and realities of fat and trash. It excavates the histories that reside in both to create moving artifacts. Like an archaeological dig, the performance reveals autobiographical, evolutionary and behavioral layers of these histories exposing cover-ups and bold confessions. Like a museum display, developed expressly for this venue, it gradually makes visible what is deeply hidden.
SF externalizes, in real time, discernible patterns drawn from excavated material and perceptual gaps in time, sound and movement. It explores the monstrous fusions of the body and trash: something part-human, part-artifact, part-culture, part-trash.
SF is created by Morgan Thorson and performed by Karen Sherman, Kristin Van Loon, Jessica Cressey, Hannah Kramer, Max Wirsing and Morgan Thorson with backup support by Hadley Smith. Thorson’s works have been presented at PS 122 in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University, On The Boards in Seattle and DiverseWorks in Houston.
